We have a dedicated imaging room where all x-rays and ultrasound exams are carried out. We have two x-ray machines in the clinic – a larger generator that remains in the clinic and is used for most lameness and medical x-rays. A smaller portable machine is taken out to owners’ yards for either emergency x-rays (e.g. to rule out a fractured leg before moving an animal), or for performing more routine x-rays such as those for laminitis.
These radiographs are developed using Computed Radiography, presenting the image on a computer screen, which can then be manipulated to improve the diagnostic appearance. These images can then be sent around the country (and even globally!) to specialists for further interpretation and advice. They can also be copied to a CD for owners to keep.
Ultrasound examinations involving lameness and medicine cases are performed with a powerful hand held scanner that can be connected to a larger screen. Despite being a portable scanner, it produces fantastic images of tendons and ligaments amongst other things. Its portability means that it can also be taken out to yards for easier convenience.
