We offer full and exhaustive investigations in to ongoing medical problems affecting your horse. We use a whole variety of methods to investigate the symptoms, and often in conjunction with specialists around the country, will adopt latest thinking in veterinary therapeutics to deal with the disease.
Surgery
We have the facilities to perform most surgical procedures on your horse. If one of our own vets do not feel sufficiently comfortable in performing the operation we will use one of a number of consultant surgeons, each leaders in their own particular field, who will travel to the clinic and perform the surgery.
The most common procedures involve orthopaedics (lameness) – arthroscopic (“key-hole”) surgery is performed by, amongst others, Prof Roger Smith (Royal Veterinary College) and Matt Smith (Newmarket Equine Hospital). Another common procedure we carry out is a neurectomy and fasciotomy procedure to treat proximal suspensory disease, a common diagnosis in competition horses over the past 10 years. We have had fantastic results with some cases that have gone on to compete again much to the delight of their owners. Other procedures undertaken include wound debridements and suturing, splint fracture removals and dental and sinus surgery.
Occasionally, we may come across a case that requires specialist surgery in a referral hospital, and as we always put you and your horse first, we will occasionally refer these cases to a specialist referral centre for surgery and intensive monitoring. Colic is one such disease that warrants 24 hour, around-the-clock monitoring, with the added need of being able to operate at a moment’s notice should the need arise. We feel that those doing colic surgery on a regular basis are best equipped to ensure maximum chance of survival of these cases. It is a well-known fact that survival rates for colic surgery are higher in specialist referral centres. To this end we have developed a very good relationship with amongst others, the Royal Veterinary College (Potters Bar), Rossdales and Partners (Newmarket) and the Animal Health Trust (Newmarket).
